The pair / The flock

Still here.
Still us.

Chickadee pair bonds can last for years. In winter, pairs join small flocks and keep in touch with calls.

There is something familiar in that.
A voice you know. A little company in the cold.

For the two who stayed.
And the friend who always calls back.

A Pixiwoo winter story

The OnesWho Stay

Most of the birds that sing all summer are gone before the first snow. The black-capped chickadee stays.

It weighs less than half an ounce. On winter nights it sleeps alone in a hollow just big enough for one, lets its body cool to save what warmth it has, and shivers until dawn. Then it comes out, finds its mate, and starts talking.

Chickadees pair for years. Through the whole winter the two keep to the same small patch of woods, rarely out of earshot, calling back and forth so neither loses the other in the snow. Every morning, they find each other again.

In January, on the coldest mornings of the year, the chickadee begins its spring song — two clear notes, long before anything thaws. Not because winter is over. Because the light has started coming back, and for a chickadee that is enough.

So when you hear that small, bright voice on a bitter morning, think of the two who stayed. Through every winter, side by side.

Still here. Still us.

Three true things. The chickadee weighs less than half an ounce. On winter nights it drops its body temperature 12–15 °F to save energy, and shivers till morning. Pairs stay together for years, calling to each other through the snow.
