Most birds leave when the cold comes. Cardinals don't. A red male and his tan mate huddled on a snowy branch, painted in loose strokes onto a speckled stoneware mug with a raw terracotta base. One name under each bird — his on one side of the handle, hers on the other — so whoever picks it up finds their own name facing them.

This is stoneware pottery, not thin ceramic: thick walls, a real weight in the hand, and a glaze that shows a little grain. The bottom third is left unglazed so it sits warm and matte on the table.
