The tradition goes back to Victorian England and was set down in print in 1922. Why every anniversary year has a material

The tradition comes from Victorian England and was set down in print in Emily Post's 1922 Etiquette: paper for the first year, wood for the fifth, tin for the tenth, crystal for the fifteenth, china for the twentieth, silver for twenty-five, gold for fifty. The materials get tougher as the marriage does β€” from the fragile stuff of everyday life toward things meant to last.

We don't take the list literally. Nobody frames paper. Instead each year gets the suncatcher that carries its meaning: a flowering branch for four, a wood-and-acrylic panel for five, a real faceted crystal drop for fifteen, a red cardinal pair for ruby, two golden frogs on a vine for gold.

How to choose

Start with the year above β€” or skip it. Most people end up picking the animal that reminds them of the two of them: the pair that never leaves in winter, the frogs sheltering under one leaf, the koi turning in the same water. Personalize with names and the date where offered. Every piece ships gift-ready with a printed story card.

Questions, answered

What is the traditional gift for each anniversary year?

1st paper, 2nd cotton, 3rd leather, 4th fruit or flowers, 5th wood, 10th tin, 15th crystal, 20th china, 25th silver, 30th pearl, 40th ruby, 50th gold, 60th diamond. The list was popularized in Emily Post's 1922 Etiquette; a modern list was added in 1947.

Can I add our names and wedding date?

Yes on every piece marked Personalized. Enter the names and date at checkout; we print them exactly as typed and send a preview by email before production for photo and map designs.

How long does it take to arrive?

Each suncatcher is made to order. Standard designs ship within 3–5 business days; personalized pieces take a few days longer for the preview step. Order at least two weeks ahead of the date to be safe.

Is it real glass?

Two materials. Holographic acrylic pieces are lightweight 5mm acrylic with a stained-glass look and a hologram finish that throws rainbows β€” not glass. Stained glass pieces are real 0.5 cm glass with a zinc edge. Each product page states which it is.

What if we're past 50 years?

Sixty is diamond and seventy is platinum. Our crystal-drop pieces suit both; message us and we'll help you pick.
